Refuse, Recycling, and Streets

The Village will collect bundled brush, tied with twine ONLY, 4 ft lengths x 2 ft diameter, at the curb on Mondays from April 4-October 24. There is NO fee for this program and you do not need to register. The contractor will go throughout the Village weekly on Mondays.

Trash and recycling is collected by Village crews at the house instead of at the curb - find your schedule below. Residents provide their own trash containers and all trash needs to be in bags. The Village provides recycling bins - call the office or use the Service Request Form to request a bin. If your trash or recycling gets missed, for whatever reason, contact us and we will always send the crew back.

On Wednesdays the Service Department does Box Pick Ups. Call or submit a Service Request to get on the Wednesday schedule. This pick up is intended for large boxes, for example when moving, that a resident doesn't want to break down. Packing materials can be left in these boxes.

Bagged Yard Waste pick up is available as a subscription service on Mondays, April 4 thru October 24. The Village cannot accept yard waste in the trash. (See Bundled Brush card for information regarding weekly pick up)

• Pick up day is Monday (Holiday Pickups on Tuesdays 5/31, 7/5 & 9/6)
• 10 bag limit for yard waste at the house
• Materials are mulched - NO Trash, plastic, containers etc. can be in the bag
• Yard waste bags must be out by 8 AM but no sooner than 6AM on Monday
• Yard Waste Only – Only yard waste from the registered address
• No plastic bags or cans can be used
• Loose material must be in YARD WASTE BAGS ONLY – maximum 50 lbs
• Yard Waste Bags Residents will receive 15 free yard bags at start of program. Bags will be delivered for online registrations. Yard Bags can be purchased at any home supply store.
• Note: For online registrations after 12 pm on Fridays, pickups will begin 1 week later on Monday

Bulk item pick up is a fee program allowing residents to dispose of large items (furniture etc) that can't be taken with the weekly trash. More information and registration is below.

• Quantity limit – 3 cubic yards (for example 3’ x 3’ x 9’ = 3 cubic yards)
• For larger quantities residents must contract individually with a service
• Items should be on paved surface near the garage by 8 am, loose items bundled/boxed
• Workers CANNOT move items from inside your home or garage
• Registration deadline is 5 pm the Wednesday before pick up, as long as openings are available.

Examples of Acceptable items include:

• Appliances without refrigerant
  - MUST have tag if refrigerants have been removed
• Furniture, mattresses and box springs
• Carpet (4-foot lengths)Building materials, drywall, wood - nails removed or bent over
• Water heaters, furnace parts
• Brush bundled / tied with twine in 4-foot lengths

Excluded items* include:

• Hazardous, medical, liquid wastes, paint, tires
• Concrete, stone, dirt, rock

The Village collects leaves at the curb each fall. Generally, the collection begins in October and ends in early December, depending on the weather. Leaves need to be raked to the curb and should be free of large branches and other debris that will disable our leaf machines.

We are prohibited from picking up paint, gas, oil, or household hazardous waste products. This includes certain swimming pool chemicals, as well as toxic cleaning products . Note: Latex paint can be dried out and disposed of in the regular trash - you can use kitty litter to help dry out the paint or pour it out on newspapers to dry.

Ottawa Hills is known for the its beautiful surroundings. Over many years the Village has planted trees in the right-of-way along Village streets. The Village maintains these trees, which are on a routine trimming schedule. Occasionally the trees become damaged and need to be removed. The Village will replace these trees with a new, young tree whenever possible. Tree planting occurs in late fall which is best for their health.

The Village is not able to collect yard waste or tree limbs. This waste is not accepted by the local landfill. Residents can sign up for a subscription program to have yard waste collected each week or yard waste can be taken to area recycling centers and disposed up for a minimal charge. The closest yard waste center to the Village is Clean Wood Recycling at 6505 W. Bancroft, 419-843-9663.

If a limb falls from a Village street tree, or if a tree limb falls in the street blocking traffic, please contact us and we will send someone out. The Village is responsible for maintenance of trees in the right-of-way.

The Village works hard to make sure our roads are the best maintained in the region during inclement weather. You can help by keeping vehicles off the road when salting and plowing are likely to occur. Also, contractors need to be reminded not to leave snow from driveways on the road. The snow can freeze on the roadway causing safety issues.

Sometimes Village plows do damage to lawns, sprinkler heads, etc. Please contact the Village regarding any damage caused by our crews.
